Many are confused when they encounter the title pharmacy technician. They are not sure how to exactly delineate the roles of a pharmacist, a pharmacy technician, and a pharmacy assistant. Many do not know, however, that the role pharmacy technician plays in the day-to-day duties of a pharmacist, contributes greatly to the smooth operations of the pharmacy. In most states, the role pharmacy technician is greater in status compared to the pharmacy assistant.
What exactly is the role pharmacy technician serves? One thing is for sure, they do not prescribe medications. They only receive the prescriptions and verify these with the pharmacists. Another role pharmacy technician does is to ensure the organization of the work place. This is done through inventory of stocks, counting of the pills, labeling of the bottles, among others.
The assistive role pharmacy technician does is by preparing the medications for the clients, mixing the medications as prescribed, and filling up of prescription bottles. An administrative role pharmacy technician plays is by filing paperwork of patients and handle insurance claims.
The role pharmacy technician has to do in the workplace is not an easy task as it may seem. Many of the role pharmacy technician does is through collaboration and teamwork. The role pharmacy technician functions as is also very significant, not only for the safety of clients but for the credibility and the license of the pharmacy in general.
It is important to delineate the role pharmacy technician plays in the field of pharmacology. Why? By clearly delineating roles, we avoid malpractice, we avoid going beyond the stated scope of practice, and most importantly, we do not compromise the health of clients.
